Fonctions : This image is an example of a popular mascot and advertising logo used for many years. The image was painted originally by Francis Barraud who was inspired by his late brothers fox terrier 'Nipper' who one day was found listening closely to a phonograph. His painting was completed on February 11,1899 and was originally titled 'Dog looking at and listening to a Phonograph' and then renamed 'His Master's Voice'. The original painting featured an Edison-Bell phonograph but when Barraud tried to sell his painting to the company they declined to purchase it. He later decided to repaint the image and went to the Gramophone Company Ltd in London to borrow a gramophone to use as a model. In 1899 Gramophone Company purchased Barraud's revised painting and by 1900 it began to be used for their many advertising campaigns. A gentleman by the name of Emile Berliner brought the painting to the United States to use it as a logo before it was acquired by Eldrige Johnson who formed the Victor Talking Machine Company. EMI today has the original painting which is the successor of the gramophone company.
