Description : A commemorative biscuit tin box heavily decorated with flags and crests honouring _The Canadian Expeditionary Force_. The top includes the phrase _From the Land of the Maple_. Printed around all sides of the tin are the names and dates of the battles of World War I: Neuve Chapelle, 1915: Langemarck, April 1915; Ypres, April, May 1915; Givenchy, June 1915; Loos, Sept. Oct. 1915; Somme, July, Aug, Sept. 1915; St. Eloi, Feby, March 1915, April 1916; St., Jul, April 1915; Festubert, May, June 1915; Hooge, May, June, July, Aug. 1915, June 1916; Sanctuary Wood, June 1916; Courcelette, Sept. 1916; Vimy Ridge, April 1917. On the sides are two flags (Red Ensign and Union Jack) on each side of a crest showing _ten provinces_ (while Newfoundland was not a province in 1917, perhaps the crest with thistles and a fish represents Newfoundland.) (A white sticker, removed from the bottom of the tin is inside and reads: Southworks - 59, S3357 - 48 - possibly a recent sales sticker.) Inside the lid is a photograph of _The Fathers of Confederation 1867-1917_ with all their names. The box is dated: _Aug 1917_.
Fonctions : William Mellis Christie, biscuit manufacturer was born at Huntley, Aberdeenshire, Scotland on 5 Jan. 1829 and died at Toronto 14 June 1900. He apprenticed as a baker in Scotland and at age 19 immigrated to Canada. In 1848 he began working as a baker's assistant in Toronto and by 1853 had become co-owner of a city baker. Christie began to acquire a reputation for biscuits after winning a local prize in 1858. In 1868 he joined with Alexander Brown to produce biscuits mechanically for shipment across Canada. Christie, Brown and Co. expanded rapidly and in 1879 Christie bought out his partner while retaining the firm's name. The operation was incorporated in 1899.
