Description : A colour photograph of Mayor Hazel McCallion standing next to the great bell at the Fo Guang Shan Temple in Mississauga. McCallion is standing on a platform next to a large bronze bell or Bonsho that is embossed with raised bands and inscriptions. She is wearing a blue suit jacket with matching skirt, a fuchsia coloured blouse and a gold brooch. A wooden Shumoku, used to strike the bell is seen hanging in front of her with yellow rope.;;Abbess Venerable Yung Ku, is standing I the foreground and is wearing a yellow and red robe. There are other dignitaries and guests standing around. A large red banner near the front of the temple is marked with Asian script and English text which reads: Ceremony for Buddha's Birthday & Vegetarian Food Fair
Fonctions : Photograph taken at the Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto's celebration of Ceremony for Buddha's Birthday and Vegetarian Food fair that occurred on May 27th 2001.;;The morning bell is supposed to symbolize awaking people from their elusive dreams and to remind them to practice the teachings of Buddha.;;The Buddhist temple is part of the Mahayana monastic order and the Canadian branch of Fo Guang Shan of Taiwan. It was founded by Venerable Master Hsing Yun in 1967.;Fo Guang Shan Temple of Toronto is part of the Buddha's Light International Association Toronto Chapter and is located at 6525 Millcreek Drive in Mississauga. It opened up ca. 1994. The temple also houses library, cultural museum, bookstore, and conference room and tea house.
