| Description : | Rectangular cream-coloured theatre program for Hudson Theatre, New York printed with black ink (16 pages). Front cover has an upper banner with words _The Playbill_ and lower banner with words _Hudson Theatre_. Between banners is a black and white image of an elderly lady wearing a black cloak and a white lace bonnet holding a cane and gazing at the ground. Back cover has an advertisement for Chesterfield's cigarettes. The program appears to cover Hudson Theatre's season for 1938 and features 'Whiteoaks' by Mazo de la Roche presented by Victor Payne-Jennings and starring Ethel Barrymore, advertised as beginning on Monday evening June 20, 1938 on page 5. Other references to 'Whiteoaks' in the playbill are : page 6, Rogers Peet Company ad; page 10, a synopsis of scenes; page 12-15, who's who in the cast; page 16, advertisement. |
| Fonctions : | In 1927, Mazo de la Roche's (1879-1961) novel "Jalna" won the $10,000 first prize in a competition sponsored by "Atlantic Monthly", which provided her with recognition and success in the future. Mazo de la Roche is significant to Mississauga as she lived in Clarkson during the time she wrote her award winning novel, "Jalna". Mazo lived in Trail Cottage, which was located on property that had originally belonged to the Benares Estate. Some people speculate the Benares House was Mazo's inspiration for the Whiteoaks of "Jalna." Mazo was friends with the Harrises and had visited Benares. She was born in Newmarket as Mazo Louise Roche. She was the only child of Alberta and William Roche. Mazo died on 12 July 1961. See: C.J.
