| Description : | A paper backed novel titled: "Neaera: A Tale of Ancient Rome." The author is John W. Graham. The book was first published by "Macmillan and Co." in 1886. The cover title is printed in dark brown letters against a light brown backdrop. It states on the book that: "This Edition is intended for circulation only in India and the British Colonies". The inside title page has a date of 1887, in addition to No.33 printed on the left hand side. At the top of the title page is handwritten in black ink: 'E. M. Harris, 71 St. George St., Toronto', and another name "Naomi? Mitchell". Between pages 4 and 5 is inserted a small pamphlet (15 pages) titled: 'Quarterly Paper of Intercession and Thanksgiving for the Church's Work Abroad'. No. LXXXVI, 4th Quarter, 1922 (Oct, Nov, Dec).; Livre à couverture souple intitulé «Neaera : A Tale of Ancient Rome» de l' auteur John W. Graham, publié en 1886 par «Macmillan and Co». Le titre sur la couverture est imprimé en lettrage brun foncé sur fond brun clair. Un avis indique que le livre ne doit circuler qu'aux Indes et dans les colonies britanniques. La date sur la page de garde indique «1887», le «No.33» figure à gauche et «E.M. Harris, 71 Rue St. George, Toronto» ainsi que «Naomi? Mitchell» sont manuscrits à l'encre noire, à la marge supérieure. Une brochure de 15 pages est insérée entre les pages quatre et cinq. | Fonctions : | John William Graham (1859-1932) was Tutor in Mathematics, 1886-1897, and Principal, 1897-1924, of Dalton Hall, the Quaker hall of residence at Owens College and later the University of Manchester. He played a prominent part in the Society of Friends. He was a member of the Society's Meeting for Sufferings and its Peace, Education and Literature Committees. He produced a number of written works and was involved in many campaigns against vivisection, smoke nuisance and militarism. _http://archiveshub.ac.uk/features/03021904.html_ The book belonged to Elizabeth M. Harris (1835-1910), eldest daughter of Elizabeth (née Molony) and Captain James Beveridge Harris. She was born on board a ship as her parents immigrated to Canada. Also known as Bessie, she lived at Benares until 1888, when a series of inheritances allowed her, with her sister Lucy, to buy a house in a fashionable Toronto neighbourhood, such as their houses on Beverly Street and St. George Street. Some of their furniture from Toronto is in the Benares collection. Elizabeth 'Bessie' died in 1910. Items are donated by Barbara Sayers Larson. Barbara Larson is the daughter of Annie Harris (1882-1986) and Beverly Sayers (1882-1976) and granddaughter of Arthur (1843-1932) and Mary (1859-1954) Harris. Barbara was born January 27, 1920 and was the youngest of three children. Barbara and her siblings, Geoffrey Sayers (1907-1997) and Dora Sayers Caro (1915-2004) donated Benares to the Ontario Heritage Foundation in 1969 after inheriting it from their aunt, Naomi Harris (1883-1968). Many of the items donated by Barbara originally belonged to her mother or Aunt Naomi and came from Benares. Barbara lived in a log cabin originally given to her by her grandparents at 1723 Birchwood Drive. She still maintains a close tie with Benares and is now living in Kelowna, British Columbia, with her daughter.; Ce livre appartenait à Elizabeth M. Barbara habitait une maison en rondins que ses parents avaient reçu de ses grands-parents. La résidence se trouve au 1723 Birchwood Drive. Barbara maintient un lien avec Benares et habite aujourd'hui avec sa fille à Kelowna, Colombie-Britannique. |
