Description : An eight page booklet printed in black on white paper. The front cover has a photograph of a communications terminal sharing a computer with screen and keyboards that fold up over the screen. On the proper right is attached a telephone. The title for the booklet is "Installation and Guide" in capital letters with grey shadowing of each letter. The lower proper right corner is the logo "NT northern Telecom" The inside cover page has an introduction with a heading "Congratulations" and explains the product is a "featured telephone and data access terminal". The following page has a table of contents: (1). Installation, (2) Basic Operations (3) Solving Operating Problems (4) Other information) (5) Back of Terminal.
Fonctions : Booklet accompained the 'Alextel' computer that was used by the donor's son Mitchell. Mitchell was was enrolled in the gifted program at Gordon Graydon Public School. Each of the students in the program recieved a computer to be used and was able to keep it. The computer allowed the students to check on their assignments and communicate with other students. The computer was given the name 'Alex' or 'Alextel' and was part of an ineractive videotext information service provided by Bell Canada between the years 1988 and 1994. Customers were able to rent the computer which had a standard modem and was used with regular phone lines. The cost to used the service was about thirty cents per minute and was considered quite costly.Founded in 1895 as Northern Electric and Manufacturing, Northern Telecom, or NORTEL, produced telegraphic switchboards, dial equipment, vacuum tubes for long distance calls, wireless two-way communication devices, electromechanical switches, and push-button phone dials by 1950. After 1950, the company continued to grow, producing: satellite and antennae equipment, digital communication devices, fibre-optic technology, and more. Over a 100 year period, NORTEL evolved from "telephony to multiservice Internet and IP-based global communication solutions." The company filed for bankruptcy in 2009.
