Description : A round red and black china plate, heavily decorated with flower, scroll, and paisley designs. There are three delicate pagodas around the rim. The main colours are black and red. Other colours are blue, green, yellow, pink, orange, brown. Patter is transfer printed rather than hand painted. The centre bottom is marked with the numbers "8397" in red, an "m" and "c". Also some indented oval-shaped marks are indecipherable.
Fonctions : The donor is a descendant of the Schreiber family and was given this plate as a wedding present by Mary Harris in 1947. The members of the Schreiber and Harris families were great friends as both parties attended St. Peter's Anglican Church in Erindale. According to the donor, she had many happy memories of Benares when she visited with 'Aunt Na' for tea. She also recalls that when the grownups were having tea the children played in and around a hallow tree. Beatrice Schreiber Geary is the daughter of Edith and Cuthbert Schreiber and step great-great granddaughter to the famous female artist Charlotte Schreiber (1934-1922). This plate was part of an original set used by Captain James Harris and his family. The pattern name is unknown but it is from Staffordshire.
