Description : A typed, carbon copy of a letter addressed to The Hon. Louis Breithaupt, Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Ontario, from Mary Fix, dated 25 October 1957. It reads: "We are most anxious to present this beautiful film to Her Majesty, the Queen, as it appeared from the broadcast by His Royal Highness, The Prince Philip, that industrial development of the right kind was of deep interest to Her Majesty and himself." She goes on to write: "May we ask your kind offices in making the necessary recommendation to the Secretary of State of Canada, The Honourable Mrs. Ellen Fairclough.
Fonctions : The film "The Cinderella Township" (1957) was produced by Ashley & Crippen Studio of Toronto as "a continuing campaign to attract new industry within" the township's borders. It was directed by Dan Gibson, scripted by Ken Armstrong, a resident of the Township for many years, and Joel Aldred, well-known commentator, did the narration. Source: Press Release: Township of Toronto Film is a Gift to the Queen (2009.20.242)."Louis Breithaupt was born in 1869 in Berlin (later Kitchener), Ontario, and was educated at the University of Toronto. He rose to become head of his family's leather business in Kitchener. He was a Member of Parliament from 1940 to 1952. Breithaupt was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in 1952 and served until 1957. He was active in many service groups, such as the YMCA and Rotary Club. He became Chancellor of Victoria University in 1959, and died in Toronto in 1960." She was a pioneering politician, becoming the first female federal cabinet minister in 1957 and later Secretary of State for Prime Minister John Diefenbaker's minority government. Her political career began in 1950 when she became involved with the Conservative Party and was elected to the House of Commons. She also served as "Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, Minister responsible for Indian Affairs and Postmaster General. She was defeated in the 1963 election. A trailblazer in a world of politics dominated by men, she gave about 150 speeches a year in the House of Commons and fought for equal pay for work of equal value. Ellen Fairclough also worked with the Girl Guides, the Consumers' Association of Canada, and many charities." Source: http://www.heroines.ca/people/fairclough.html
