Fonctions : | Reverend James Magrath emigrated from Ireland in 1827 and came to settle on land located north of the Dundas Highway and east of St Peter's Church. Rev Magrath had a two storey frame house built on his 700 acre property for his family and called his home 'Erindale' after his homeland. Rev. Magrath died in 1851 and bequeathed his fourth son, William Melchior V. Magrath, '20 acres containing the house and offices of Erindale' (Cane, pg 39). William was the father of Mary, Arthur Harris' wife. On March 3, 1867 the Erindale home was destroyed by fire and William and his family moved into a cottage on the Erindale property. The new rebuilt Erindale house was designed by Toronto architects Gundry and Langley who designed the house in the Italianate style. After William Magrath died in 1888 the property was sold to the Price family who operated a diary farm on the site. In June of 1920 the house was destroyed by a fire caused by an electrical storm. The remaining houses and buildings on the property were eventually demolished once a subdivision was constructed in 1954. The painting was donated by Barbara Sayers Larson, the great great-grandaughter of Rev Magrath. The painting was inherited by Barbara from either her mother, Annie, or her aunt Naomi. Kathleen Agnes Sayers (ne‚ Colloton) (1906 -1981) was Geoffrey Harris Sayers' wife. Geoffrey Sayers and his wife Kathleen (n‚e Colloton) married in 18 November 1933 at St. Peter's Anglican Church, Erindale, which the Harris family had been members for almost a hundred years. Geoff and Kay occupied Benares from 1969 until 1981. They kept a small display of artifacts in the kitchen, and opened up the house once a year to the public. Kay and Geoffrey never had any children and were the last Harris relatives to live at Benares. |
