The blade and shank are made from solid metal. The shank is composed of two flanges 24.0 cm long x 3.0 cm wide on each side of the handle stem, held in place with 3 rivets. The blade of the spade is forged from two pieces of metal, with shanks, and hammered into one piece with no join visible on the blade. The handle stem is curved to fit into the shanks. A lip is welded onto the top edges of the blade where the foot would press down an where the two sheets of metal were most vulnerable to rust. The front shank is marked 'CAS' or 'CAC'.
