| Description : | Leather based guest book. It has a burgundy cover that is trimmed in gold. Front has a gold insignia that measures at 8.5 x 9cm; the coat of arms for the City of Mississauga. It features a crest and a crown, a soldier in a 1700's uniform, a native person, and waves at the bottom above a ribbon with the following quotation: "Pride in our Past- Faith in our Future". Around the outer edge of the front cover is a thin gold line. Inside, the first double pages are decorated around the edges with burgundy and gold maple leafs and branches. The page in the right also has the same insignia at the top, a crest at the bottom and the caption. "Visit of this Royal Highness the Duke and Duchess of York on the occasion of the official opening of the Mississauga Civic Centre July 1987." The page has the signatures of the Duke and Duchess Andrew and Sarah. Balance of book has a page for the signature of Mayor and Councillors of the City - as well as many pages for guest signatures, but none of these have been filled in. |
| Fonctions : | The guest book shows the political figures that were at the opening ceremony of the Mississauga Civic Centre. The opening took place on July 1987. The Duke of York and son of Queen Elizabeth II (now Duke of Edinburgh), Prince Andrews and his then wife Duchess of York Sarah were part of the ceremony. The Duke seemed impressed with the building, which is shown through the quote 'it's quite remarkable'; however, the media took the quote as a form of criticism.The coat of arms for the City of Mississauga is used as the corporate seal. The images uses represent the past, present and future of Mississauga. The wheat sheaf represents agriculture, the cogwheel represents industry, the falcon represents the aircraft industry. The crown, is made up of trilliums and Maple leaves, is used to represent Canada's and Great Britain's relationship. The trillium is the flower of Ontario and Maple leaves are a Canadian symbol. The waves located at the bottom of the crest is to represent the Credit River that flows through Mississauga. The 'atomic' symbol located above the crown is to represent the technological industry in Mississauga; the three orbits represent the Towns of Mississauga, Streetsville and Port Credit that joined together to make the City of Mississauga. The uniform solider and the Aboriginal figure symbolize the 'First Purchase'; the officer holds the scroll from the treaty and the Mississauga Indian holds the quills of the four chiefs who signed it.
