Description : A red and cream coloured rectangular coaster, hand made and decorated with needlework. The needlepoint has beige stitching, with a red border and a red geometric design in the centre. The backing is missing.
Fonctions : The cushion was possibly made by one of the Scottish aunts, Matilda Lindsay or Margaret Patton. Matilda Lindsay (c. 1804-1887) was the youngest daughter of Margaret and Major General John Harris and sister to Captain James Harris of Benares. Matilda married the widowed Colonel Lindsay in Perth, Scotland and helped to raise his two daughters, Alice and Annie. She was a faithful correspondent to her brother James and his family. Matilda was the source of family information from Scotland and many of their letters are located at the Peel Heritage Complex Archives in Brampton. Matilda regularly sent care packages to Canada with books, clothes, candies, jewellery and money from herself and her sister and cousin. Colonel Lindsay died c. 186X. She lived with her sister, Margaret and cousin Margaret Anne Patton at #8 Rose Terrace, Perth until her death in 1887.Margaret Patton n‚e Harris (c.1800-1877) was the sister of Captain James Harris of Benares and Matilda Lindsay. Margaret, named for her mother, Margaret Marshall Harris, married her first cousin, James Murray Patton. In 1831, James inherited 2/3rds of the Glenalmond Estate in Perthshire, Scotland with his brother Thomas. During James' ownership, a group of Highland whiskey bootleggers were caught by a force of excisemen and calvery on Glenalmond lands that was immortalized in a ballad (1837). James Murray died on Christmas day in 1853. Glenalmond was left to James' younger brother Thomas and later to his sister Margaret Anne Patton whom Margaret lived with. Margaret frequently wrote to her brother, Captain Harris at Benares and would help to send care packages to his family with her sister Matilda. Margaret died in 1877.

Items donated by Barbara Sayers Larson. Barbara Larson is the daughter of Annie Harris (1882-1986) and Beverly Sayers (1883-1976) and granddaughter of Arthur (1843-1932) and Mary (1859-1954) Harris. Barbara was born January 27, 1920 and was the youngest of three children. Barbara and her siblings, Geoffrey Sayers (1907-1997) and Dora Sayers Caro (1915-2004) donated Benares to the Ontario Heritage Foundation in 1968 after inheriting it from their aunt, Naomi Harris (1883-1968). Many of the items donated by Barbara originally belonged to her mother or Aunt Naomi and came from Benares. Barbara lived in a log cabin originally given to her mother by her grandparents at 1723 Birchwood Drive. She still maintains a close tie with Benares and is now living in Kelowna, British Columbia, with her daughter.
