Description : A finely tooled heavily embossed leather book cover. The front and back panels have fine tooling in a cergical-type design with red, green, browns, and black colours, and a stamped gilt border in a clover and circular pattern. The spine is embossed with star-type motifs, each about .3 x .3 cm, in a dark brown finish. The spine has a heavy wear line down the centre. The edge is whip-stitched with dark brown leather through .3 cm holes, .6 cm from the edge at .8 cm intervals. The inside has cover ends 21 x 6.7 cm at each side edge, held in place by the whip-stitching, with the same tooling design and gilt border as the outer panels, with rich, deep colour. The lining is of brown linen. At the top and bottom edges there is a turn in of plain brown leather, extending 1.2 cm from the edge.
Fonctions : The spine wear indicates that the cover was used for storage of papers or booklets, rather than for books. Items donated by Barbara Sayers Larson. Barbara Larson is the daughter of Annie Harris (1882-1986) and Beverly Sayers (1882-1976) and granddaughter of Arthur (1843-1932) and Mary (1859-1954) Harris. Barbara was born January 27, 1920 and was the youngest of three children. Barbara and her siblings, Geoffrey Sayers (1907-1997) and Dora Sayers Caro (1915-2004) donated Benares to the Ontario Heritage Foundation in 1969 after inheriting it from their aunt, Naomi Harris (1883-1968). Many of the items donated by Barbara originally belonged to her mother or Aunt Naomi and came from Benares. Barbara lived in a log cabin originally given to her mother by her grandparents at 1723 Birchwood Drive. She still maintains a close tie with Benares and is now living in Kelowna, British Columbia, with her daughter.
