| Description : | A cranberry glass ovifrom pendant hanging from a wall fixture. The fixture has ribbed design and is hung on one chain. The socket is a new replacement.; "Pendentif en verre «canneberge» de forme ovale, accroché à une applique murale. Le motif de l'applique est strié et est accroché par une chaîne. | Fonctions : | This cranberry shaded hall lamp was originally used with kerosene. Although not an original Benares's piece, it was acquired by Edith Augusta Draper (ca. 1859-1941) who was related to the Harris family through Annie Harris's marriage to her nephew, Beverly Sayers. Aunt Ede, or Edith Draper, was Geoffrey, Barbara, and Dora Sayers's aunt. Edith Augusta Draper (c. 1859- 1941), the granddaughter of Chief Justice William Henry Draper (1801-1877), had an illustrious career as a nurse and missionary. After attending nursing school at the Bellevue Hospital, New York, and working at the Illinois Training School for Nurses, she trained nurses for the Cook County and Presbyterian Hospitals in Chicago in the early 1890s. By 1893, Edith moved to Montreal to become the first Lady Superintendent of Nurses appointed to the Royal Victoria Hospital until 1896. Throughout her life, she travelled to Nova Scotia and Italy to render her services and eventually retired in 1910 to live closer to her family in Erindale, Ontario. Edith was remembered at the Royal Victoria as an efficient organizer, strict disciplinarian, just and firm. One of her students from the Royal Victoria Hospital recalls that Edith "was most considerate of her nurses" and always made sure they had dinner breaks. The nurses recognized that she "had a kindly heart, gave us her best and expected us to do ours". Edith was invited back to the Royal Victoria Hospital in 1933, by the first graduating nurses class, to attend a ceremony in which they presented a portrait of her to the training school. Amongst her neighbours in Erindale she was known to be very quiet, kind, and was the person to go to with minor ailments. This item was donated by Geoffrey Harris Sayers, who was born 23 April 1907 and died 25 November 1997. Geoffrey Sayers and his sisters, Dora Sayers Caro, and Barbara Sayers Larson donated Benares Historic House to the Ontario Heritage Foundation in 1969. Geoffrey Sayers and his wife Kathleen (nee Colloton) occupied Benares from 1969 until 1981. During that time, they acted as care takers of the estate on behalf of the Ontario Heritage Foundation. They kept a small display of artifacts in the kitchen, and opened up the house once a year to the public.; "Cette lampe à abat-jour «cranberry» éclairait à l'origine au kérosène. Elle prend éventuellement sa retraite en 1910 est s'installe à Erindale, Ontario pour habiter près de sa famille. |
