Description : | A framed sepia coloured engraving entitled 'Cattle Crossing the Salway' by artist Sam Bough and engraved by Lumb Stocks. The engraving shows an image of men on horseback and on foot herding cattle on a beach. Seagulls, ducks and dogs can be seen in foreground. In the background several other figures are visible. A monument or building is visible in the background of the engraving on the proper right. The horizon is heavily clouded. The print is encased in a plain, duck wood frame with heavy grain and covered in glass. The back of the frame is covered in paper. Hanging wire is attached to the back with screws. |
Fonctions : | Sam Bough (1822-1878) was born in Carlisle, Cumberland in England and was a self taught landscape painter. He was know for his love of walking and drew inspiration from his works by what he saw on his walking travels. The Solway featured in this image is a body of water located on the east coast of central Scotland. This low level waterway forms the border between England and Scotland and has calm and shallow waters allowing cattle to be moved between these two countries. Lumb Stocks (1812-1892) was a British engraver who started work in engraving at the age of 15 in London.
