Description : A set of cut steel and beaded shoe buckles in silver/grey colour. The buckles are rectangular and are curved in the centre. They have a fan shaped design with beading along the outer edges of the design and sewn around the cut steel studs. The back of the buckles are a pale pink silk with a metal clip for attaching to shoes. The clips have "Holpast, Pat. PP.FC, France" engraved on them.
Fonctions : Cut steel jewellery was popular during the 18th century as a substitute for diamonds but was in decline by the mid 19th century as the standards of workmanship declined. Cut steel is a very difficult and time consuming process. Steel nails or studs were individually faceted and polished. Each stud was riveted one at a time thorough tiny holes in a base plate usually made of brass or low grade silver. The studs were faceted and mounted in such a manner as to imitate diamonds. Cut steel is often mistaken for marcasite jewellery but marcasite are set in clasps rather then riveted.
