Description : | A glass bar-bell shaped knife rest. Balls at each end are cut with diamond shapes. The bar at the centre is a hexagonal shape. |
Fonctions : | Knife rests were used to protect a table or tablecloth from a piece of cutlery that was used throughout the meal. Knife rests or carver rests mostly likely date back all the way to the late 17th and early 18th Century. The upper classes would often enjoy meals that involved a substantial amount of courses and would only have a single set of cutlery to use throughout the meal. The earliest knife rests would have been made from a single piece of wood but as years passed knife rests were made from an array of materials including gold, silver, ivory, horn and even glass. |
