The articles summarizes the funeral service of actress Gertrude Lawrence. According to the article, 5000 fans "jammed the area of Fifth Ave. and Fifty-Fifth St." while "1,800 others filled the flower-banked auditorium of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church for the funeral of Gertrude Lawrence. She died Saturday of cancer of the liver." At the funeral "400 floral pieces and bouquets blanked the rostrum." Gertrude was buried in "the champagne satin ball gown of the 1860's in which she, as an English governess, danced a polka- waltz with Yul Brynner, as King of Siam, in The King and I." She first appeared on stage in 1908 in the Christmas Pantomime at Brixton Theatre, and eventually reached stardom as a sensational musical star in both London and New York. She appeared in dozens of stage productions, most notably Broadway's "The King and I" with Yul Brynner (1951). Between 1929 and 1950 she starred in eight feature films, including "The Glass Menagerie." Source: |
