Description : | A hand-painted souvenir card of a Hindi man. He is carrying a torch and a rope in his hands. The card is part of a photo album with other photographs (2003.1.4a-ay). |
Fonctions : | Bhisti is an eighteenth-century Hindi word for water carrier. The souvenir card might have been sent by one of the Harris military men who were stationed in India throughout the nineteenth century. For example, John Fitzcharles Lock Harris (ca. 1833-1866) sent souvenirs and letters frequently to his aunts in Scotland in the 1860s. John was a lieutenant in the 24th Regiment of Foot and the Madras 14th North India Company. John and Arthur Harris (1843-1932) were first cousins as Henry William (1805-1849) and James Beveridge Harris (1797-1884) were brothers. The photographic print is part of an album (2003.1.4) with several other photos. A note in the album states, 'When Capt. J.B. Harris's sisters, Margaret Harris Patton and Matilda Harris Lindsay, died - these albums were sent over to him from Perth, Scotland.' Another piece of paper (2003.1.4b) also reads 'This looks like Margaret Patton's album - the writing looks identical.' Items donated by Barbara Sayers Larson. Barbara Larson is the daughter of Annie Harris (1882-1986) and Beverly Sayers (1882-1976) and granddaughter of Arthur (1843-1932) and Mary Harris (1859-1954), n‚e Magrath. Barbara was born January 27, 1920 and was the youngest of three children. Barbara and her siblings, Geoffrey Sayers (1907-1997) and Dora Sayers Caro (1915-) donated Benares to the Ontario Heritage Foundation in 1969 after inheriting it from their aunt, Naomi Harris (1883-1968). Many of the items donated by Barbara originally belonged to her mother or Aunt Naomi and came from Benares. Barbara lived in the log cabin originally given to her parents by her grandparents at 1723 Birchwood Drive. Barbara still maintains a close tie with Benares and currently lives in Kelowna, British Columbia, with her daughter. |
