Description : A pamphlet containing welcome home greetings from the Mayor, Council and Citizens of Moncton New Brunswick to the returning Canadian troops in 1919. It thanks them for their courageous and unselfish war effort and wishes them well in their future civilian life. It also remembers those who gave up their living for others.
Fonctions : Robert Herridge received this pamphlet when he returned to Canada in 1919. Robert Herridge was born in Berkshire England on May 12 1895. He moved to Canada with his parents (Edwin Herridge 1850-1930 & Emily Elizabeth Bate 1858-1936) and two sisters in 1914. They settled in Clarkson as their older brother Dennis was established there. He enlisted with the 126th Overseas Battalion on January 6 1915. Robert obtained the rank of corporal within the 38th Battalion and fought in France and Belgium including the battle of Vimy ridge. Robert was discharged due to demobilization on May 25th 1919.While overseas in England Robert met Lillian May Sceeny (born Jan 13th 1899). They were married and Lillian came to Canada a war bride, meeting her sister-in-law Eva on the boat trip to Canada. Robert and Lillian had one daughter Ruth Herridge born in 1923. Ruth never married. Robert's attestation papers list him as a farmer but later documents list his profession as a French Polisher. Robert worked for Ms. Fairburn at the Clarkson Market (now known as The Barn, on Lakeshore road) doing high end refinishing of furniture. Lillian who had worked for the Gramophone Company in England did not work in Canada. Robert re-enlisted with the army in 1940 but was discharged in 1944 due to an injury obtained in the First World War. He instead served with the Veteran Guard in Petawawa. Both Robert and his brother George purchased land near fifth line from Charles Herbert Stevenson to build houses. Robert, Lillian and Ruth moved briefly back to England but returned when Robert couldn't find work. Robert, Lillian and Ruth also lived at 1227 Birchview Dr. Robert died on January 10th 1983 and Lillian died on September 6th 1987.
