Description : A colour photograph showing only the upper balcony, front, of Benares House. In the foreground are bushes and a purple lilac tree in bloom which obscure the view of the remainder of the house. Written on the back is "Benares '76".
Fonctions : Photograph was taken when Benares house was owned by Ontario Heritage Foundation (Ontario Heritage Trust). Located at 1503 Clarkson Road North on Concession 2 SDS, pt of Lot 28. House was built in 1836 by Edgar Neave who sold it to Captain James Beveridge Harris. The house was rebuilt in 1857 by William Heron, Leslie and Dingwall after it was damaged by fire. Several generations of the Harris family lived at the home; the last being Naomi Harris, granddaughter of Captain Harris, who lived there her entire life there. After her death in 1969 she willed the house to her nephew, Geoffrey Harris Sayers and her nieces, Barbara Sayers Larson and Dora Sayers Caro. The trio donated the house to the Ontario Heritage Foundation. After extensive research, the house was renovated in the style of 1918, and opened in 1995 to the public as a museum. It was transferred to the ownership of the City of Mississauga and operates as part of Museums of Mississauga.
