Description : A black and white photograph showing the exterior of Edinburgh Castle in Scotland. The castle is seen near the edge of a large hill ? The image is surrounded by a white border that has serrated edges.
Fonctions : Photograph taken when Dora Sayers travelled on a trip to Europe in 1933.Edinburgh Castle is a famous tourist site in Scotland. The history of the site dates back to over 3000 years. The site was first known as Din Eidyn when there was Roman occupation in Scotland during the 1st and 2nd Centuries AD. It was not until 638 AD that it was taken over by the Angles that the site was known as Edinburgh. By the Middle Ages it became Scotland's primary royal castle home to royalty and headquarters of the sheriff of Edinburgh, military garrison and storehouse of the royal gun train as well as the repository for the crown jewels and state records. The site continued to expand with the building of the St. Margaret's Chapel, David's Tower and the great hall of James IV. After the 1745 the castle has continued to serve as an active army base and now is home to the Scottish National War Memorial and two Scottish regiments.
