Fonctions : | Three women, sisters Mary and Margaret McCallum and Miss Ida 'Babs" Norman, moved to Clarkson in 1929 to fulfill a dream; owning and running a tea room. He three women originally lived and worked in Toronto. All three women had good jobs with secure income. Mary graduated nursing school at the Toronto General Hospital in 1917 and began practicing as a nurse. Margaret was an executive secretary at the head office of the Canadian Bank of Commerce, and Babs was a dental nurse. After Babs started to manage the boarding house she realized she had a talent for cooking, and potential for running a tea room. All three women loved the country. In 1929, they decide to buy `The Apple House' in Clarkson located on the corner of Meadow Wood and Lakeshore Roads from the Fairbairn family. The name, The Blue Dragon Inn, came from a restaurant and inn that had previously been located across the street. Visitors to the original Blue Dragon Inn included author Mazo de la Roche and her companion Caroline Clement who stayed there in 1922 while Trail Cottage was being built.Margaret, although a part of the business venture, was rather quiet and continued her position in Toronto. Babs used the experience she had developed in Toronto and managed the kitchen, while Mary managed the general daily operations of the business and was hostess to the clients. The business was very successful, mainly because of Babs' cooking, and the beautiful d‚cor of the house. Many people came to the Blue Dragon Inn from Toronto and the surrounding areas including singer Frances James. The three women became quite active in the Clarkson community. All of them joined the Clarkson United Church and they were known in the area for their generosity. The doors of the Blue Dragon Inn closed for the last time in 1955. The ladies were aging and no longer able to deal with the demands of running a business. Mary passed away in 1963; she left a large portion of her estate to Christ Church (former Clarkson United Church). Babs died in July of 1972, and Margaret shortly after that. |
