Description : | The entire desk is wooden. The rolltop detaches from the bottom chest of drawers and rolls upwards, revealing the work surface, and the upper drawers. A round, grey knob provides a handle on the rolltop. The top has four small drawers, two on each side, and each with one round knob. An open cubby hole separates the upper drawers in the centre. Three drawers make up the bottom section of desk, each with two round knobs. The legs of the desk are short and curve outwards slightly. |
Commentaires : | Missionaries were required to keep detailed records. These included diaries of daily events, copies of letters sent and received, annual reports, church registers, records of church activities such as church services and Bible lessons, and accounts of goods ordered from or shipped to Europe. This desk was most likely purchased from a larger center, such as St. John's. It may also have come via the Harmony, the ship which brought goods from England to the Moravian missionaries. It was used in the manse office, which has been vacant of a resident minister since 1991. The museum salvaged the desk from the manse basement. |
Fonctions : | This desk was used by missionaries in the manse office. It would have been used for tasks such as writing letters and organizing various records. |
