Description : The sextant is housed in a varnished wooden box which has a locking mechanism and key on the front. The lid of the box is held to the body via a brass hinge. The top of the box has a brass handle for carrying the unit. The sextant is made up of a number of brass components. The index arm is responsible for moving the index mirror. The indicator points at the arc which shows the measurement. The body of the sextant is the key that ties all of the other components together. There are 6 shade glasses, with 3 located above the horizon mirror and 3 below it.
Fonctions : The sextant is an instrument that is used to aid in navigation. The sextant is generally used to measure the altitude of a celestial object above the horizon. The angle, and the time when it was measured can be used to determine a position line on a nautical chart. Held horizontally the sextant can be used to measure the angle between any two objects, allowing for a calculation of position on a chart.
