Commentaires : | Herbert Whittaker designed a 1935 production of THE SPANISH MIRACLE, by George Brewer, presented by the Everyman Players at the Church of the Messiah in Montreal. THE SPANISH MIRACLE was a play about the Spanish mystic Ramon Lull, played by George Brewer. Thomas Archer, theatre critic at the Montreal Gazette, commented, "The real triumph lies in the staging and costuming which are often exceedingly beautiful [...] These costumes are superb and there is perhaps only one man in the city who could have designed them." ("'Spanish Miracle' Played In Church,'" Montreal Gazette 23 April 1935, p 19). Herbert Whittaker (1910-2006) spent much of his life in the service of Canadian theatre. Beginning as a stage designer and director in Montreal, Whittaker became the theatre critic for The Globe and Mail from 1949-1975. He was the first national chairman of the Canadian Theatre Critics Association, founding chairman of the Toronto Drama Bench, an Officer to the Order of Canada, and founding chairman of Theatre Museum Canada. |
