Commentaires : | Herbert Whittaker designed a 1937 production of TAMING OF THE SHREW, by William Shakespeare, presented by West Hill High School in Montreal. The production was directed by Charles Rittenhouse. Heward Stikeman commented, "Herbert Whittaker's set was a revelation in its freshness of colouring and composition balance" (McGill Daily, 19 March 1937). Herbert Whittaker (1910-2006) spent much of his life in the service of Canadian theatre. Beginning as a stage designer and director in Montreal, Whittaker became the theatre critic for The Globe and Mail from 1949-1975. He was the first national chairman of the Canadian Theatre Critics Association, founding chairman of the Toronto Drama Bench, an Officer to the Order of Canada, and founding chairman of Theatre Museum Canada. |
