Description : | This black metal typewriter is rectangular in shape. It has 51 keys, which are white with black lettering, and are arranged in 4 rows. A long, black space bar is located below the rows of keys. "Imperial" is printed in gold-coloured letters across the top and front of the typewriter. At the bottom of the front of the typewriter, "50" and "British Right Through" are printed in gold-coloured lettering. A black and red ink ribbon runs between two reels, one on each side of the typewriter. The ribbon is held close to the platen by a metal clip. The platen is a black rubber cylinder with metal bars protruding from each end, and a circular, black handle on the end of each bar for turning the platen and winding the paper forward. The oilskin cover has a black outside, with Imperial stamped in gold-coloured letters. The inside of the cover is pale pink. |
Commentaires : | The Imperial Typewriter Company emerged from the Moya Typewriter Company, and marketed its first machine in 1908. Model 50 typewriters, like this one, were the first of the new frontstrike typewriters that the company produced. Frontstrike typewriters were an improvement over previous models, because the type bars did not obscure the typist's view of the typed work, as had occurred with the earlier downstrike models that Imperial manufactured. Frontstrike models are so named because the type bars swung up to hit the platen (or roller) from the front, as opposed to the downstrike models, where the type bars swung down to hit the platen. The model 50 also offered interchangeable typefaces, carriages, and platens. This model 50 is what is often called a conventional typewriter; it has a four-bank qwerty keyboard, is inked by a ribbon, and is a frontstrike machine. Model 50 typewriters were manufactured from 1927 to 1955. The Imperial Typewriter Company was Britain's leading typewriter manufacturer until its demise in 1974. This typewriter was donated to the museum by Enid Starr. |
