Commentaires : General Sydney Valpy Radley-Walters "The best known and most well-respected battlefield commander in the Canadian Armoured Corps." General Radley "Rad" Walters was born in Gaspé, Quebec in January 1920. Education was deemed a very important component of life by his father, and Rad was eager to learn. He grew up being educated in one room schoolhouses and later kept with a family tradition and attended Bishops University. Here he played football and followed a Bachelor of Science hoping to become a physician or forestry engineer. He graduated in 1940 but enlisted as an Infantry Officer later that year with the Sherbrooke Fusiliers. As a young officer, Rad wasn't familiar with the aspects of combat or how to use a tank but emerged out of the .Second World War recognized as a Tank Ace, destroying 18 tanks in total. His career in the army was a success as his rank continued to soar and became the first commanding officer of the 8th Canadian Hussars. He went from a Captain to a Major to a Lieutenant Colonel where he was one of the youngest regimental commanders and finished as a Brigadier-General. His final career change was in 1971 when he became the commander of the training centre in CFB Gagetown. It was here that he educated the young Canadian soldiers. " It really comes back on our own shoulders, that before they put us 6 feet into the ground, that somebody should sit down and each one us at least pass on to the generations that's going to follow, some of the lessons which we learned." This is exactly what Radley Walters did. He passed on the tricks of the trade to younger generations because "Why relearn what is already known?" In 1974, Radley Walters announced his retirement after a long career as a tank commander in the Canadian Army. Radley Walters was married after the war to Mary Patricia and had four sons. On April 21st, 2015, General Sydney Valpy Radley-Walters died at the age of 95.
