Commentaires : | George Barlow from Landsdown, England brought this to Canada in the 1840s. George gave the gun to his son Samuel Barlow of Bideford. Samuel passed the gun onto his son, George T. Barlow who in turn passed the gun onto his daughter, Hazel Cook of Bideford. This gun would have been obsolete by the middle of the 19th century. Rifles, which had a much more accurate shot, took over after they were improved upon and could achieve the same loading speed and firing frequency as the musket. To use a musket, the gunman would take out a cartridge (consisting of a lead bullet and gunpowder, all wrapped in paper). He would bite off the end with the bullet and keep it in his mouth, while pouring a small portion of the gunpowder into the "priming pan" and closing it over. The butt of the musket is put on the ground and the rest of the powder is poured down the barrel. The paper is then stuffed inside to keep the powder in, followed by the bullet (spit from the mouth of the gunman). He would then draw the ramrod from below the barrel, and ram the powder, paper, and bullet tightly down. The ramrod is replaced, the musket is brought up to the shoulder, the gun is cocked, and the gun is fired. Soldiers trained at this process every day until they could do it blind and could fire 3 rounds a minute. |
