Description : Hearth Bench; wood, metal, tin, brass, leather; two square metal boxes connected by an extendable wooden arm (186cm long); each of the two boxes has a hinged square lid at top; box lids are padded and covered in leather; one of the boxes is lined in tin and was used for ashes, the interior of the other box is lined in green felt-like material and was possibly used to hold kindling; attached at front of each box is a raised brass adornment; no visible maker's marks
Commentaires : This bench provided storage for kindling and ashes removed from the stove; the padded tops of the boxes provided seating, and as it is located around the stove, this seating would be a warm place to rest; the function of this bench is similar to that of a club fender with storage. Wood, as a fuel, can be burned in a furnace, stove, or fireplace. Wood is the most easily available form of fuel. As much of the Island was once nearly all wooded land, wood was an economical fuel. Wood heat is still common throughout much of the world. This bench is on display in the parlour of the Bideford Parsonage Museum. The Bideford Parsonage Museum was originally the private residence of Thomas H. Pope, Accountant and Telegraph Operator and was constructed in 1878 for Mr. Pope and his wife, Susan Elizabeth (Eliza) Yeo. In the Summer of 1884, the house was purchased by the Methodist Church for use as their Parsonage and was home to many parsons and their families over the years. Author Lucy Maud Montgomery was only 19 when she came here in August of 1894, to board with the Reverend John F. and Mrs. Ada Estey, while in her first teaching position at the nearby Bideford No. 6 School. She would board here until May of 1895.
