Commentaires : | The Nicholson was launched 29/11/77 and commissioned 12/08/1979 as a Spruance Class destroyer. They were originally built as specialized ASW ships with only point defence missiles for the AAW role. They have been provided with anti-ship capability with Harpoon missile system and the extra punch of the Tomahawk, capable of striking surface or land targets. The Spruance destroyers represents the largest destroyer class built by any Western Navy since WW11. The ship is named for the Nicholson family who served in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and the Civil War. Capt. Samual Nicholson was first Commanding Officer of the USS Constitution (old Ironsides). The Sealion with 5 spears represents the 5 officers the stars represent the 3 wars they fought in and the latin motto reads: "Fortune Favors the Bold". |
