Description : A large wheel with 12 spokes is positioned vertically and attached to a post that connects to the base. The base, which rests on three legs, is closer to the ground on the wheel's end (where there are two legs), and further from the ground at the other end (where there is one leg). Opposite the wheel is the spindle assembly, where the yarn would gather during the spinning process. It stands straight up from the base at a slight angle, and is attached to two fairly thick cylindrical pieces. The spindle itself is positioned horizontally to the floor, near the top of the spindle assembly. The initials "IW" (for "Isaac Wry") are carved into the base near the centre.
Commentaires : This spinning wheel was hand-crafted by Isaac Wry (1816-1879) for his wife Mary Fields Wry (1835-1916) for the occasion of their wedding on July 1, 1860. Isaac was originally from Yorkshire, England but later made his home in Sackville at the end of what is today, Wry Lane. Mary Fields, from Shemogue, New Brunswick, was Isaac's second wife, and together they had four children. Isaac was very skilled, developing his trade as a ship's carpenter, as well as a farmer and a woodsman. Mary was an ardent craftswoman, and she became an expert weaver. She and Isaac raised sheep, and she would shear the sheep, card, and spin the wool herself before weaving blankets, bedding, and clothing. This spinning wheel was used in this process.
Fonctions : This spinning wheel was used by Mary Fields Wry to spin wool yarn.
