Description : 1939-1945 Star: 6 months service on active operations (2 months for active aircrew) between 2 September, 1939 and 8 May, 1945 for Europe or 2 September, 1945 for the Pacific. Obverse: 6-pointed star with circle in the middle. In middle of circle reads the interlaced letters GRI and below that, in the same circle, reads VI. At the top of the circle is a royal crown and the words in the outer rim of the circle read The 1939-1945 Star. Ribbon: Dark blue, Red and Light blue equal stripes. (Representing the Navy, Army and Air Force). Italy Star: Awarded for operational service in Sicily or Italy between 11 June, 1943 and 8 May, 1945. Ribbon: Alternate equal stripes Red-White-Green-White-Red. Colours represent the colours of Italy. France and Germany Star: Awarded for service in France, Belgium, Holland or Germany between 6 June, 1944 (D-Day) and 8 May, 1945. Ribbon: Alternate equal stripes Blue-White-Red-White-Blue. (Representing the Union flag and those of France and the Netherlands but not Belgium). Defence Medal: Awarded to Canadians for 6 months service in Britain between 3 September, 1939 and 2 September, 1945. Obverse: George VI, uncrowned coinage head facing left. The medal is circular and silver 800 fine. British issues are made of cupro-nickel. Reverse: The Royal Crown resting on the stump of an oak tree and flanked by a lion and lioness. On the top left is the date 1939 and on the top right 1945. At the bottom is the wording: THE DEFENCE MEDAL. Ribbon: 1 ¬"; Orange (flame-coloured) «" central stripe flanked by 3/8" Light Green stripes with a narrow Black stripe in the middle or each green stripe. The Flame colour with Green edges represents the enemy attacks on the green land of England and black represents black-outs. Canadian Volunteer Service Medal: Awarded to Canadians for 18 months voluntary service between 2 September, 1939 and 2 September, 1945 or for any voluntary service outside Canada. Bar: Awarded for 60 days service outside of Canada. Silver bar with a maple leaf in the centre. A Silver Maple Leaf is worn on the ribbon in undress. Obverse: Seven Marching figures representing males and females of the Army, Air Force and Navy and the Nursing Service. Inscription around the edge reads: 1939 CANADA 1945 VOLUNTARY SERVICE VOLONTAIRE with a small maple leaf before and after the word SERVICE. Reverse: Coat of Arms of Canada. Ribbon: 1 ¬"; Royal Blue centre («" wide) with two equal stripes of Scarlet and Green, the green being on the edge. 1939-1945 War Medal: Awarded to all full-time personnel of the armed forces for 28 days servce between 3 September, 1939 and 2 September, 1945. (also Merchant Navy). Obverse: George VI, crowned head, facing left. It is a circular medal and it is silver 800 fine. British issues cupro-nickel. Reverse: A Lion standing wanton on the body of a double-headed dragon. The two heads; and eagle's and a dragon's, signify the principal occidental and oriental enemies. Ribbon: 1 ¬"; White-Red-White narrow central stripes with ¬" Dark Blue and Red Stripes on the edge (red at outer edge).
