Description : British War Medal: Authorized 26 July, 1919 (for service 5th August, 1914 - 11 November, 1918) Awarded to all ranks of the Overseas Military Forces of Canada who came overseas from Canada between 5th August, 1914 and 11 November, 1918 or who have served in a theatre of war. The R.A.F. Requirement was the same as the Army but the personnel of the naval forces required 28 days of mobilized service or if they lost their lives before the service period was complete. Seamen of the Canadian Merchant Marine who served at sea not less than 6 months and crews of Dominion Government Ships and the Canadian Merchantile Marine were also eligible. Obverse: George V. uncrowned coinage head, facing left, with the legend GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP: Reverse: A horseman (St. George, naked) armed with a short sword (an allegory of the physical and mental strength which achieves victory over Prussianism). The horse tramples on the Prussian shield and the skull and cross-bones. In the upper circumference between the horse's neck and the knee of the rider is the sun of Victory; in right and left field is 1914 and 1918. Ribbon: 1 1/4": Orange centre (5/8"): edges from outside to inside are Blue-Black-White (1/8", 1/16", 1/8" wide). Orange is watered. Victory Medal: Awarded to all officers, warrant officers, NCOs and men of the fighting forces and civilians under contract, and others employed with military hospitals who actually served on the establishment of a unit in a theatre of war between 5th August, 1914 and midnight 11/12 November, 1918. (It was also issued to members of a British Naval mission to Russia 1919-1920 and for mine clearance in the North Sea between 11 November, 1918 and 30 November, 1919). This medal is never issued alone but is always issued with the British War Medal. Obverse: The winged, full-length figure of Victory, with her left arm extended and holding a palm branch in her right hand. It is a circular medal and it is copper lacquered bronze. Reverse: The legend in four lines: THE GREAT / WAR FOR / CIVLIZATION / 1914-1919 with a line of dots below the words surrouned by a wreath. Ribbon: 1 «" watered, double rainbow from the outside to the middle Violet-Blue-Green-Yellow-Orange centre.
