| Description : | This artefact is an early 20th century sports trophy. The Trophy is a silver challis that bears the inscription "CEI-CLB 1906 Catch Train Race Won By." The trophy has little in the way of decoration and consists of a cup section that has been soldered to an hourglass shaped stand that flairs widely at the bottom. |
| Commentaires : | Physical activity and sporting competitions have long formed one of the pillars of the Church Lad's Brigade since its inception in 1892. From the earliest days of practicing gymnastics in the armoury near the Harwood Lumber Company wharf to present day sporting events, the CLB has had a long tradition of competition. At the height of the denominational cadet organizations in St. John's in the early 20th century a healthy inter-brigade rivalry was formed between the CLB; Methodist Guards; Catholic Cadet Corps; and Newfoundland Highlanders. Two of the main events were the rifle competition, dominated in the years before the Great War by the Methodist Guards, and the brigade race in the annual city regatta. The inaugural brigade race in 1897 was won by the CLB, who went on to win the race 8 times in the first 15 years of competition. In 1905 the CLB formed the Athletic Association and began an indoor sporting event for the brigade lads. One of the first indoor sports evenings was held on April 5th 1906 in the CLB Armoury located on Kings Road. The event was broken into two divisions, senior and junior. The program for the event informed readers that the "officers of the CLB have kindly consented to act as starters and judges." The event was endorsed by Lieutenant Colonel R.G. Rendell, commanding officer of the Brigade. The program also provided a list of the 20 events that were scheduled to take place during the evening. The 'Catch-the-Train' race was listed as the 10th event of the evening and was for the senior division boys. The program did not explain the nature of the race and it did not appear as an even in subsequent indoor sports nights, though each year the program included a themed event specific to that year such as costumed boxing, or a costumed walking race. The indoor sporting event became a sporting tradition in the CLB. A program for one such event in 1961 showed the development of a third division, the intermediate division. By this time there had developed a standard set of events which included various distanced foot races, boat and barrel race, and inter-company relay. Like many of the CLB cadets, the recipient of the1906 trophy joined the Newfoundland Regiment on 13 October 1915 at New Harbour. Erness John Rendell was 18 years of age upon enlistment. He was killed in action the following year on the 12th of October, though the exact circumstances of his death were unknown to those who completed his service record and officials were unable to satisfy requests by his adopted family as to the particulars of his death. Of note are the various spellings of his last name. The CLB Armoury has recorded his name as Randell, while his service record records it as both Rendell and Randell. |
