Description : | Part of the reform efforts of the Catholic Church, prompted by the 1545 Council of Trent, was to better educate and inspire its illiterate members about their faith. Artists were commissioned to create paintings, sculptures and stained glass windows with specific iconography to allow for easy identification of the story and characters. Salvator Mundi (Latin: "Saviour of the World") is one of these images. The compositional elements are identical " the right hand is raised in benediction while the left holds a globus cruciger (cross-bearing orb), representing the world. Despite the set imagery, each artist brought their own distinct interpretation to the painting. Solimena uses chiaroscuro " strong contrast between light and shadow " for dramatic effect on the countenance of a youthful Christ and in the folds of his clothing. Primarily a religious painter, Solimena's work was in demand throughout Europe and he became one of the wealthiest and most famous painters of his time. -- Curatorial staff |
