James Duncan was born in Coleraine, Ireland, coming to Canada in 1825 & settling in Montreal 1827 where he spent the balance of his life. Though he taught at the High School of the Montreal Society of Arts, he is best known as a proffessional artist, painting landscapes of Montreal & its environs. He published various lithographic views of Montreal & Quebec, & sketched for the Illustrated London News. He is known to have painted some portraits & miniatures about 1842, & at a slightly later date collaborated with Cornelius Krieghoff in painting a Panorama du Canada. The folowing was noted by Karen Mills, Fine Art consultant, who appraised the work on Dec.15, 1984: incribed on the reverse by Mr. John Russell, former owner, indicating on a hand drawn map where the house had been located. In exceptionally fine condition with vivid colours & sharp attention to architectural detail, this is an excellent example of Duncan's work. Inscribed on the back as: The House of Mr. Francis Mullins, ca.1870, 11 3/4 x 16 1/2, unsigned.
