Description : All wook mallet -no identifying marks. From burn marks, oil and smoke smell would say used in blacksmiths shop. a) Jead 15 3cm long with dia. 5.7cm. each end and circumference of 20.9cm on each side of handle. Running around the circumference of the head is a line cut in with a knife to mark the centre where the hole was in with a knife to mark the centre where the hole was drilled to place the tang of the handle which extends throughth entire head where a wedge is placed in the split in the handle to tighten the handle in place. With head of mallet near you, handle facing straight out away from you chipped side up and to yor right. Largest chip is 2.5cm long, 0.2cm deep and 1cm wide. 0.4cm towards you another chip 2cm long, 0.25cm wide and 0.2 cm deep. 0.1cm closer is another, 0.7cm long, 0.4cm wide and 0.3cm deep. The ends of these are all flared from hammering. Crossing centre line 0.6cm from handle is a crack in wook 8.5cm long with a small chip out a 0.6cm from lone 1cmlong and 0.35cm wide. Further from you 0.4cm from crack is a small on 3cm long. Mallet in same position turn it over. Running past edge of handle extending the whole length of head is a redish brown stain 0.15cm wide. At the edge to your left it extends towards you for 2 cm and widens out to 0.6cm. At this point there is a chipped area 0.5cm wide and 0.5cm long, with a mashed area of the same size next. On the top edge to your right is a mashed area 3.5cm long cressent shaped 0.3cm wide at widest point. With mallet same side up turned so handle is straight across in front of you head to your left. On top side of handle 6.5cm from base is a triangular stain 3.5cm long 1.1cm deep point facing you 1.1 cm from right piont is small gouge.0.3cm by 0.4cm Above this on far side of handle 5.5cm from base another stain 9.5cm long 1.3cm. Directly below another you have to turn the mallet over to see 5.5cm long 1m1cm wide 4.9cm from base of handle. With this side up on top base edge is a chip 0.7cm long 0.3cm wide. To the right of the neck of handle some glossy red enamel paint marks, rangingin size from 0.2cm by 0.3cm, to 0.5cm by 0.7cm and 0.3 by 1.1cm are the main three with minute spots near by. These are at a point0.6 cm from base of handle. The head is not likely the original. The handle cna be easily pulled out of head but wedge stays in head.
