| Description : | An artfully modelled terracotta sculpture done in the classic "Gandhara" manner, in the Hadda style. The face is full, with a large nose, recessed eyes, arched eyebrows, a pursed mouth accented with moustache. Luxuriant hair is piled up on top and is falling down in curls to the sides. The baked clay surface has been burnished and covered by a reddish slip. The hair has a lot of black pigment intact. Fine surface patina consistant with the attributed period. |
| Commentaires : | Portrait heads represent the characteristic facial structures, hairstyles and ornamentation of the various ethnic groups found in the region of Hadda, in what is now north west Pakistan. The full wavy moustache identifies this man as a Scythian. Most stucco and ceramic sculpture was painted and traces of the original pigment can be clearly seen in this example. |
