Description : | Rectangular nylon flag with red background and a white band vertically along the left edge. A nylon cord is sewn into the casing along the left edge and looped around a wooden toggle at the top. The imagery on the flag features an outline of a tipi showing flaps and poles, and decorated on the interior with the Union Jack stripes and colours (red, blue and white). This image is approximately 45.0 x 32.0 cm and is located roughly in the top left quadrant of the flag. The other image is of a shield and is on the right half of the flag. The shield in blue, green, yellow and white, has one black, white and red eagle feather on each side, a crossed pipe and tomahawk at the bottom in brown, a brown buffalo in the centre and a yellow arrow inside the buffalo, pointed in the direction of tail to head and broken into seven segments. Siksika Nation is written above and around the top of the shield in black stylized capital letters. |
Commentaires : | Narrative: It is extremely difficult to design a simple, visual-interpretation of the Blackfoot History, in the form of a flag. However, I have tried to capture it the way people should understand it, whether they are sixteen or sixty five years old. Also, I have tried to design it in such a way to find it's way into our modern way of life, without straying away from our proud past. First of all, I placed the buffalo in the centre of everything, for it is one of the sacred animals of our tribe, and also, it meant a great many things to us such as food, shelter. Within the buffalo is an arrow divided into seven parts, which honors the seven main societies in the past; Horn Society, Crow Society, Black Soldier Society, Old Woman's Society, Prairie Chicken Society, Crazy Dog Society and Matsiyiiks Society. Down from the buffalo is a medicine pipe protected by the power of the Blackfoot in the form of a tomahawk. The circles behind the buffalo stand for the promises made to our great Chief Crowfo |
