Description : | Copper printing plate on wood block. A copper plate with a raised contact surface affixed to a wooden block by six finish nails. Block has a rectangular hole in the lower portion. Block features an advertisement for teaspoons and is divided into roughly three sections by scrolled lines: top left the words, "TUDOR PLATE Oneida Community Made; Lower left the words, "For even your most formal dinner parties this exquisite product of the Oneida Community will lend a distinctive charm. A price too that will fairly astonish you. Teaspoons $2.00 Set of Six" ; Right an image of a teaspoon topped by a coat of arms over top the words, "The QUEEN BESS." The coat of arms is divided into four quadrants the first and fourth of with contain a fleur-de-lis while the second and third are blank; a crown tops the coat of arms. |
Commentaires : | This printing block was used by Roger's Hardware located in Charlottetown, PEI. The Oneida Community was a utopian commune founded by John Humphrey Noyes in 1848 in Oneida, New York. There is some doubt whether the spoon pictured is actually of the Queen Bess pattern. |
