As many as twenty dogs could be required, but the more usual number was seven to nine dogs. A strong and spirited dog is given the longest trace and the role of lead. Behind the lead dog are two or three strong dogs with equal trace lengths and then the weaker dogs are given trace lengths that place them closer to the sledge."; |
